Hey friends! Welcome back to my blog! Today I thought it would be a good idea to do an updated post about Adult Acne. Adult Acne is so common! If you are experiencing it, your are not alone.

You would think after your teenage years that it would go away.. but most times adult acne can pop up in our 20s, 30s, and even 40s. CRAZY! I know. But it's true. In today's blog post, we're going to talk all about what causes adult acne and how to treat it!!!

What is Adult Acne and what causes it? :

Acne is a skin condition that is described as open pustules that contain dirt, oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. These pustules can become red, irritated, and inflamed. The main cause of Adult Acne is actually Hormones. Our homones fluctuate as well age, different life experiences, menstruation/menopause, pregnant, postpartum. Other causes can be stress, diet, medication, and bacteria.

A common cause of Adult Acne is Stress: take a chill pill! No really. I know it's easier said than done but it's important to try our very best to engage in activities that calm the soul. We have to find ways to relieve our stress like, working out, practicing yoga, going for walks, praying, reading a book,  or anything that gets you realxed. Stress causes our bodies make more of an hormone called Cortisol which in turn causes our skin to produce more oil, this can lead to clogged pores and acne.

The next most common cause of Adult Acne is hormones! As we age, our hormones start to change. This is especially common in women as we reach menopause or if we start to take, or stop taking birth control. Pregnancy and postpartum hormones can also contribute to acne. You can't really stop hormones from fluctuating but you can counter act with supplements, vitamins, and birth control.

How To Treat Acne?

Before we get into topical treatments and skin care products. I'm going to recommend a few things that can be helpful in treating acne.

1. Drink more water! Drinking water helps to purify skin from the inside-out. It helps to slow down oil production and helps to increase skin cell turnover. This will help to make your skin look more even and clear.

2. Dairy free! Studies have shown that Dairy products can actually increase oil production in the skin which of course can lead to breakouts/acne. Try a week or even a month without dairy and see if you notice a different in your skin.

3. Exercise! - Working out helps to naturally purify the skin! the act of exercising naturally causes impurities to reach the surface and increases skin cell turnover. It reduces stress which in turn helps to reduce the hormones that cause breakouts. Just remember to cleanse your skin after your workout.

 - getting on or off some types of birth control can lead to acne due to hormones. It's best to work with your doctor to see what next steps you need to make in your birth control journey to assist in getting acne under control.

Things to Avoid when Treating Acne...

Don't pick your face!! Picking at your face can make your breakouts worse. It can also lead to hyper pigmentation and dark spots. It causes inflammation, infection, and of course scarring.

Drying out your skin! Sometimes we make the mistake of using products that dry out out skin. Drying out the skin can actually cause you to produce even MORE oil which can lead to more clogged pores and acne.

Skipping moisturizer - a common mistake, is skipping moisturizer. It is best to choose an oil-free moisturizer, this way your skin still gets the hydration it needs without leaving it greasy.

Best Products for Treating Acne:

For acne prone skin - I recommend a cleanser that is effective but doesn't strip the skin of it's natural oils. Doing this will actually cause MORE breakouts because it will cause your skin to produce more oil. These cleansers shown above are actually gentle on the skin and helps to clean, and resurface the skin, while treating acne.

Dermalogica Skin Resurfacing Cleanser - This cleanser is perfect for those who are experiencing acne along with dark spots/hyper-pigmentation. This is a 2-in-1 exfoliator cleanser that will gentle resurface the skin with Lactic Acid as one of the main ingredients. It helps to retexturize skin -  revealing smooth, soft, even skin. Kate Somerville Eradikate Daily Foaming Cleanser - This medicated cleanser is perfect for acne prone skin because it contains sulfur to help kill acne causing bacteria. It also helps to calm irritated skin and help reduce oil production. Shop here!

Peter Thomas Roth Anti-Aging Cleanser Gel - I talk about this cleanser so much because it truly is my fav! haha. It's perfect for Adult Acne and Aging skin. This gel helps to clarify the skin, brighten, and help with skin cell turnover.. so you breakout less. I love the peachy-clean smell too. This cleanser is actually great for majority of skin types but really good for acne/aging/hyperpigmentation. Shop here.

As far as moisturizer goes for acne prone skin, you definitely want something hydrating, light weight, without a greasy feel. Hydrating oily/acne prone skin is still very important in your daily routine. It's best to find one that is oil free.

Murad Anti-Aging Moisturizer - This is the best Anti-Aging Moisturizer for acne-prone skin. It contains SPF 30, so this moisturizer is going to hydrate and protect the skin. This is a great moisturizer for anyone experiencing acne and aging skin. Shop here!

Olehenriksen Oil Control Hydrator - This is a lightweight, mattifying hydrator that helps to reduce oil in the skin and minimize pores. This is a great moisturizer for makeup wearers as it will help to mattify under your foundation. Shop here!

Dermalogica Active Moist - I love this balancing, oil free, light weight moisturizer. It is sheer, easy to apply, and feels like nothing on the skin. However, it contains Lactic acid to help with skin cell turn over - as well as cucumber to feel cooling and calm on the skin. It's one of my favorite moisturizers for acne/oily skin. You will love this because it doesn't leave a greasy feel to the skin. Shop here!

I love using facial mask but they are especially effective for acne-prone skin because they target breakouts at the source and help to prevent future breakouts.

Sunday Riley Sulfur Acne Treatment Mask - this mask contains Sulfur which is an active ingredient that helps to kill the bacteria that causes acne. It treats all forms of acne - this is why I love it so much. You can also use this mask as a spot treatment. This mask is a little bit more pricey than my other recommendations but a little goes a long way and I truly think it's one of the best acne facial mask out there. It's even safe for sensitive skin. Shop here!

Origins Out of Trouble Mask - this mask can also be used as a spot treatment as well. It has camphor in it which helps to treat acne as well as calm the skin. It kinda smells like Icey Hot. I personally don't mind the smell, but just thought I mention it because it's there. haha. It helps to unclog pores and mattify the skin after use. Shop here!

First Aid Beauty Purifying Mask - this peel off mask is perfect for acne skin because it contains Red Clay that helps to purify pores, and absorb excess oil in the skin that causes breakouts. It also detoxifies the skin and diminishes shine. This is my favorite peel off mask. Shop here!

Acne Spot Treatments:

If you experience an occasional breakout, than a spot treatment would be best. Most women experience occasional breakouts when it's that time of the month (menstrual period) due to the flauctuating of hormones.

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion - acne spot solution that contains sulfur, salicylic acid, and calamine. These ingredients target pesky breakouts at the source and draw out impurities. It is best to use it a night after all other skin care products have been applied - so this is the last thing on your face. You just dab it on the blemish and wake up the next day and Mr. Pimple is saying bye bye. Haha.
Shop here!

Clinique Acne Solutions Clearing Gel - This treatment can be used daily on acne breakouts. It is a topical treatment that helps to clear clogged pores and also helps with access oil production. You can apply a thing layer after cleansing the skin or use it as a spot treatment. Shop here.

Acne Prone Skin and Pregnancy:

If you are experiencing breakouts while pregnant.. You can not use the main acne fighting ingredient which is Salicylic Acid. Instead you want to use products that have Benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide will help to fight the spread of acne causing bacteria and is safe to use while pregnant.

The Paula's Choice CLEAR Extra Strength Skin Clearing Treatment is great because it contains the Benzoyl Peroxide and is designed to help treat acne, redness, and irritation in the skin. It feels like a lotion and should be used after cleansing the skin. Shop here! Link to the skin clearing kit. Shop here.

Key pieces:

- Try not to dry out the skin
- Don't skip moisturizer
- Don't pick your face
- find products that are balancing to the skin/oil free

Just because you are experiencing breakouts that is not a reason to try to use STRONG, stripping products. Try to start off as gentle as possible because acne really is an irritation
to the skin. You don't want to make it worse.
